Tonight a rare supermoon occurred. Although it was too cloudy in my area of town to view the “blood moon,” from home, my family and I enjoyed looking at the peach hued clouds. We eventually wound up watching the supermoon live stream on TV via Time.com.
The days are getting a little shorter, and the breeze is blowing just a little bit stronger lately. The leaves are starting to gather in the streets, and pumpkin spice mania is in full force. September is drawing to an end within just a few days, and I’ve decided to wrap up the last Sunday of the month with a few of my favorite things.
Favorite Flavor – Basil
Basil thrives in the heat of summer. As the days are getting cooler, I have been forced to use up the last of my basil crop in every way possible. I have been eating this citrusy green leafy herb in pasta, tomato salads, and soups. For a twist, try using basil in fruit salads-it pairs brilliantly with melon.
Favorite TV Show To Binge Watch – Sex & The City
Thank you, Amazon Prime Instant Video for offering access to all seasons with my Amazon Prime membership! I have to admit-I have wanted to be Carrie Bradshaw ever since I saw my first episode. Perhaps my vehement obsession with this show influenced my career in the direction of writing. I’ll admit, I aspire to become the Carrie Bradshaw of food writing…
Favorite Recipe – Cinnamon Swirl Bread
If you know me personally, you know that I am not a raisin person. But I am definitely a cinnamon person, and tried this Budget Bytes recipe this week, sans raisins. I’ve been eating this bread as breakfast and dessert, slathered with butter or cream cheese. I’m a huge sucker for versatility.
Favorite Meal Out – Rubio’s
Earlier tonight, my mother took me out to dinner at Rubio’s. We both had been craving seafood, and this meal hit the spot. Forgive the bite taken out of the taco in the photo I took above. I couldn’t wait to taste it. The crispy tender fish, creamy smoky sauce, bright salsa, and fresh cabbage made my tastebuds dance. I always hoard the limes from the salsa bar for my rice-I am a bit of a citrus junkie.
Favorite Book – L.A. Son by Roy Choi
My favorite book at the moment is written by my current foodie crush, Chef Roy Choi. You might be familiar with his legendary taco truck, Kogi BBQ, which serves various areas throughout Los Angeles County. The tacos feature Korean flavors, served in a classic Latin vehicle: the street taco. Choi is responsible for making the food truck movement downright sexy.
L.A. Son paints a picture of the various neighborhoods of Los Angeles, depicting everything from the gangs who ruled the streets during the Rodney King riots, to the recipes which influenced his cooking style today. Choi’s book is highly addictive.
I can’t wait to see what October brings.
